Nothing
in the world is so compelling
to the emotions
to the emotions
as
the mind of another human being.
Niente al mondo è così affascinante
come
la mente di un altro essere umano.
Washburn was the first woman to obtain a doctorate in Psychology in the United States (1894). Her dissertation, on the influence of visual imagery on the judgments of tactual distance and direction, was published in 1895 in the Wilhelm Wundt's Philosophische Studien, the first journal of experimental psychology.
In 1897 she translated the second and third parts of the Wundt's Ethics.
She was the second woman, after Mary Whiton Calkins, to be elected president of the American Psychological Association (APA), in 1921.
Washburn published a hundred of articles, many of them with her undergaduate students who had an active part in the experimental work, although not all have then made a career in psychology or in neuroscience.
Key contributions:
- the problem of cognition and consciousness in non-human species; the results of her experimental work were published in 1908 in the book The Animal Mind;
- the motor theory of attention, based on processes which inhibit the action and allow the organism to attend to a stimulus; the proposed neural substrate was the frontal lobe.
in psicologia o, in generale, nelle neuroscienze.
Contributi
fondamentali:
-
frontali la sede dei processi neurali sottostantiThe results of experimental work, if it is successful at all, bring more lasting satisfaction than the development of theories.
